HTC's 5-inch behemoth phone spied in press render, may be called One X 5 (update: some caution)

HTC One X 5 leak

Something big has been brewing at HTC, most often referred to as the DLX or by its less-than-flattering 6435LVW name. While there have been unconfirmed photos of prototypes floating around, a Sina Weibo user has posted what we have reason to believe is an authentic press image of the finished result: meet the One X 5. As the name and image suggest, the phablet-class device should be dominated by a 5-inch (and possibly 1080p) screen that makes even a regular One X look dainty. Internal details haven't been nailed down alongside the looks, although previous benchmarks have had it using a Snapdragon S4 that might ultimately be a quad-core S4 Pro. There's no immediate signs of a stylus or other tricks besides that sea of glass. We may not have long to wait before we find out, however. HTC just happens to have a New York City event planned for this Wednesday, and previously detected links between the 6435LVW and Verizon could see the One X 5 quickly reach the US if it's meant to show at that gathering -- although it might get another name change to fit into the Droid family.

Update: We've been given a heads-up that this is a device posted as a "concept" by Danny Tu on Flickr, which raises doubt that we'll see exactly what's on show here (or see that name). However, it still lines up with earlier photos and what we've heard. We'll keep you posted as to whether or not it reflects reality in the end.

Scientists discover mutations associated with skin disorder (DSAP)

ScienceDaily (Sep. 16, 2012) ? A Chinese research team, led by Anhui Medical University and BGI, has found strong genetic evidence of a link between mutations of the mevalonate kinase gene (MVK) and disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis (DSAP). It is a major step toward discovering the genetic pathogenesis of DSAP, and sheds light on its further molecular diagnosis and treatment.

The latest study was published online in Nature Genetics.

DSAP is a rare, non-cancerous, non-contagious skin disorder that causes dry, itchy lesions on the arms and legs. It usually begins to develop in adolescents and reach near-complete penetrance by the third or fourth decade of life. The accumulated sun exposure is a risk factor for DSAP. DSAP is a chronic disorder; it can be treated, but it cannot be cured.

In this study, Chinese researchers performed exome sequencing in two affected and one unaffected individuals who belong to a DSAP family. Through variants analysis and data filtering, they supposed that MVK gene emerged as the only candidate gene located in previously defined linkage region linked to DSAP. Then they confirmed the co-segregation between the identified novel deleterious mutation and DSAP phenotype within the family.

To further identify novel MVK mutations, researchers conducted Sanger sequencing in other DSAP cases, which identified additional novel deleterious mutations. And none of which was detected in 676 unrelated and ethnically matched controls. It provided strong evidence that these novel mutations were not polymorphisms. They did not find MVK mutations in other clinical subtypes of Porokeratosis, suggesting that MVK mutations may be specific to DSAP patients.

Mevalonate kinase, the protein encoded by MVK, is an important enzyme in the mevalonate pathway that is vital for multiple cellular processes by providing cells with essential bioactive molecules. In the investigation of the impact of MVK expression on the biological activities of keratinocytes, researchers indicated that MVK plays a role in regulating calcium-induced keratinocytes differentiation and the MVK expression could protect keratinocytes from UVA-caused apoptosis.

Tao Jiang, senior scientist of this project at BGI, said, "Considering the high genetic heterogeneity of DSAP, It is fortunate for us to find the causative gene MVK by sequencing only three exomes and using previous genome-wide linkage results. Our study provides new insights into the pathogenesis of DSAP, and the identified MVK mutations offer the best candidate targets for gene diagnosis and clinical treatment of the disease."

Xuejun Zhang, corresponding author of this study, President of Anhui Medical University, said, "The exome sequencing is an effective method for identifying disease gene of monogenetic diseases in recent years. In this study, the Chinese scientists found disease gene MVK for DSAP using exome sequencing plus functional study. It not only indicates China has step into the most advanced level in searching the disease genes for monogenetic disease in the world, but also provides scientific basis for revealing DSAP pathogenesis, genetic counseling, risk prediction, prenatal diagnosis, new drug development, clinical diagnosis and treatment."

GA-ASI and TESAT Partner to Develop RPA-to-spacecraft Lasercom ...

  • System Expected to Improve Data Bandwidth Significantly

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA?ASI), a leading manufacturer of Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA), tactical reconnaissance radars, and electro-optic surveillance systems, and Tesat-Spacecom, a world leader of space-based laser communication, today announced that they have signed a teaming agreement to combine their expertise in the field of RPA laser communication (lasercom) to demonstrate a high-rate RPA-to-spacecraft lasercom link.

?New sensors and increased RPA usage will create an increased bandwidth demand for RPA-to-ground communication in the near future, exceeding currently installed RF [Radio Frequency] communication capabilities,? said Linden Blue, president, Reconnaissance Systems Group, GA-ASI. ?With the potential to increase data rates by 1,000 times, a lasercom link offers a next-generation alternative to radio Satcom [Satellite communications], and Tesat?s involvement with the U.S.-German program that has validated space-to-space and space-to-ground laser data links at very high data rates makes them the ideal partner for this new venture.?

Today?s RPA rely on RF links to transmit sensor data from an RPA. A high-bandwidth optical link between an above-the-weather RPA and a GEO satellite offers a secure, jamming-resistant, alternative to Ku- and Ka-Band data links.

?LaserCom enables the capability to integrate air- and space-based wideband Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance [ISR] systems into national command and control systems in a way that was previously not possible,? said Peter Schlote, CEO of Tesat-Spacecom GMBH & Co. KG.

Under the agreement, GA-ASI will solicit government support to demonstrate an optical laser subsystem. Tesat?s role will be to support the Laser Communication Terminal (LCT) systems engineering and deliver a data link controller to handle the data transfer between the RPA and a communication satellite.?

Following development, the team plans to demonstrate the capabilities of the lasercom system via a 2.6 GB/sec uplink to an available Low Earth Orbit (LEO) spacecraft. The follow-on prototype will use the Alphasat satellite?s Alphabus LCT in a geo-stationary orbit, verifying a high-bandwidth, RPA-to-ground data capability.

Informal labor talks resume between NHL, NHLPA

NEW YORK (AP) ? Representatives from the NHL and the players' association held informal negotiations on Friday at the league offices.

With the expiration date on the current collective bargaining agreement ? Sept. 15 ? drawing near, NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, and his top assistant and brother, Steve Fehr, sat down with Commissioner Gary Bettman and his deputy, Bill Daly, for a status check after a week of little to no communication. The two sides last held formal discussions last Friday, but those ended with Donald Fehr telling reporters the talks were in a "recess."

Players have often flanked the Fehrs for support in the process, and Friday was no different. Winnipeg defenseman Ron Hainsey, Minnesota forward Zenon Konopka and Buffalo defenseman Robyn Regher were on hand in New York.

The league has said it will lock the players out if a new deal isn't reached by the 15th.

"(We're) trying to find a way to bridge the gap," Donald Fehr said. "That's always the intent."

Negotiations, throughout the summer, have taken breaks during weekends. But with the deadline nearing, there's a good chance the two sides meet on Saturday.

"We expect discussions to resume," Fehr said. "We don't know yet."

Bettman confirmed the meeting lasted two hours on Friday, and as he has been through the most of the process, he remains optimistic.

"We'd like to make a deal," he said, refusing to characterize the mood of the morning session. "There is an ebb and flow to negotiations.

"It's always good to have dialogue."

When talks broke off last week, the NHLPA responded to an offer from the NHL with changes to an earlier proposal. The union's most recent offer came three days after the NHL made its first counterproposal last Tuesday. After asking the players to cut their share of hockey revenue from 57 to 43 percent, the NHL upped its proposal to have the players get a 46 percent share over a six-year deal.

The union revised its initial offer by proposing to restructure the fourth and final year of its initial offer. The NHLPA was willing to give back between $465 million and $800 million in revenue over the first three years of the deal as long as the system switched back to the existing agreement in the fourth year.

Donald Fehr countered by proposing "several concepts" in which the players would get less than 57 percent of revenues in the fourth and final year. The NHLPA, however, is still asking NHL owners to establish a revenue sharing program to help struggling teams.

Bettman called revenue sharing "a distraction" and questioned whether the union made an actual counterproposal or a mere response to the league's presentation.

The union has questioned the NHL as to why it is attempting to have players bear much of the burden of cost savings, especially after the league reported record revenues topping $3.1 billion last season.

Aside from asking the players to take an across-the-board cut in their share of revenues, the NHL is also seeking to place severe limits on free agency while also abolishing players' rights to salary arbitration.

The NHL has had three labor disputes since April 1, 1992, when players held a 10-day strike that forced 30 games to be rescheduled. The most recent two were lockouts.

The regular season is scheduled to begin on Oct. 11.

Russia's Putin defiant on Syria, says Romney ?mistaken? WORLD ...

world news tomorrow

WORLD NEWS TOMORROW ? MOSCOW, ? President Vladimir Putin signalled in an interview aired on Thursday that Russia was not ready to shift its stance on Syria, and suggested Western nations were relying on groups such as al Qaeda to help drive President Bashar al-Assad from power.

Putin held out hope for an end to a dispute with Washington on missile defence if President Barack Obama were re-elected in November, telling Russia?s RT television he was ?an honest person who really wants to change much for the better?.
Putin took aim at Obama?s Republican rival Mitt Romney, calling his criticism of Russia ?mistaken? campaign rhetoric and suggesting a Romney presidency would widen the rift over the anti-missile shield the United States is deploying in Europe.

In some of his most extensive public comments since he started a six-year term in May, Putin dismissed Western criticism on issues ranging from Syria to the conviction of three anti-government protesters from the punk band Pussy Riot.
Putin was asked whether Moscow should rethink its stance on Syria after vetoing three Western-backed U.N. Security Council resolutions designed to pressure Assad to end violence that has killed 20,000 people.?Why should only Russia re-evaluate its position?? he said. ?Maybe our partners in the negotiation process should re-evaluate their position.?

Without naming any country, he hinted the United States was looking to militants to help topple Assad and would regret it, drawing a parallel with U.S. support for the mujahideen who fought Soviet forces in Afghanistan during the Cold War.
?Today somebody is using al Qaeda fighters or people from other organisations with the same extreme views to achieve their goals in Syria,? Putin said. ?This is a very dangerous and short-sighted policy.?He noted that the United States had imprisoned many alleged Islamic militants at Guantanamo Bay and said it might as well ?open the gates to Guantanamo and let all the Guantanamo inmates into Syria, let them fight. It?s the same thing?.

PUSSY RIOT

Putin has signed laws in his new term that critics say are part of a campaign to suppress dissent after the biggest protests of his 12 years in power. Putin said he acted to instil order and that he had taken steps to improve democracy.?What is ?tightening the screws??? he said. ?If this means the demand that everyone, including representatives of the opposition, obey the law, then yes, this demand will be consistently implemented.?Putin declined to comment on the sentences handed down to three women from punk band Pussy Riot jailed for two years for performing a raucous anti-Putin song inside a Moscow cathedral.

?I know what is going on with Pussy Riot, but I am staying out of it completely?, he told the channel. But he suggested the band?s notoriety had forced its ?indecent? name into public discourse, reinforcing the point by prodding his interviewer to translate the word ?pussy?.?I want to direct your attention to the moral side of the issue,? he added, describing a previous group-sex stunt that included at least one of the convicted women and adding a off-colour joke of his own about group sex.

Putin said abuses committed against the Russian Orthodox Church and other faiths during the Soviet era made the Pussy Riot protest particularly offensive and meant ?the state is obliged to protect the feelings of believers?.Kremlin opponents and defence lawyers accused Putin of influencing last month?s trial and sentence, which the United States and European nations branded disproportionate.

?IMAGE OF AN ENEMY?

Putin condemned British and U.S. efforts to bar Russians linked to the 2009 death in jail of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who was arrested by the same law enforcement officers he accused of a multi-million dollar fraud. He said Russia would respond in kind if the United States adopted a law requiring the government to deny visas and freeze assets to Russians linked to Magnitsky?s death.Relations between Moscow and Washington improved after Obama moved to ?reset? ties, but have been strained by disputes over issues ranging from global security to human rights.

Putin said Russia would continue to talk with Washington about missile defence but ?protect itself and preserve the strategic balance? if the United States pushed ahead with an anti-missile shield Moscow sees as a threat.Russia?s suspicions that the shield is aimed to weaken it would only deepen if Romney were elected and pushed ahead with it because the Republican ?considers us enemy No.1?, Putin said.Romney once called Russia ?without question our No. 1 geopolitical foe?, and has promised ?less flexibility and more backbone? in policy on Russia if he wins the Nov. 6 election.

?As for Mr. Romney?s position, we understand that it is in part?campaign rhetoric, but I think it is, of course, without a doubt mistaken,? Putin said.?Because to conduct oneself like that in the international arena is the same as using the instruments of nationalism and segregation in the domestic politics of your own country.?
