Origin Genesis (Core i7-3970X)

If you've got enough cash to spare for a high-end gaming rig?like, really high-end? you've got one of two options: Buy the best or buy the best of the best. The Origin Genesis (Core i7-3970X) ($7,760 direct as tested) is a system aimed at those who choose the latter, offering users an insanely souped-up system that jams an arsenal of cutting-edge technology into a suitably over-the-top chassis. Sure, its price tag is similar to a mortgage payment on a large home, and it takes up a lot of space, but such real-world concerns are rarely an issue in an arena where boutique vendors like Origin cater to gamers who'll settle for nothing but the fastest and flashiest. So is the Genesis (Core i7-3970X) the best or the best of the best? Ultimately, it's the former. Despite having an incredible feature set and the capacity to pump out triple-digit frame rates, its performance on the gaming grid nevertheless falls short of systems equipped with more robust Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan graphics cards. Despite all of its good aspects ? and there are many ? it's not the absolute best choice for gamers who place raw power on the top of their priority lists.

Design and Features
All of the Genesis (Core i7-3970X)'s components are packed into a Corsair 800D chassis. Measuring a whopping 24 by 9 by 24 inches (HWD), it's an enormous body that looms even larger than the behemoth Silverstone body we saw on the AVADirect X79 Gaming PC. In contrast, a smaller system like the Maingear F131 Super Stock (GTX Titan) is better suited to a studio apartment or dorm room dweller with limited space to spare.

Assuming you've actually got a place to hunker this system down, you'll have plenty to admire about its look. Unlike the AVADirect X79's minimalist aesthetic or the understated design of the Editors' Choice-winning Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan), the Genesis (Core i7-3970X)'s two-tone "shredder green" custom paintjob looks as if claws have savagely ripped the system apart, creating a look presumably intended to convey ferocity. A large window on the right side of the body shows off the Genesis (Core i7-3970X)'s inner components, which look ridiculously cool bathed in the interior's LED lighting. Even cooler, an included remote controls the LED lighting strip, letting users choose a color, its brightness, and toggle between flashing or fading effects. On a more practical level, the system's Corsair 800D chassis allows three of the Genesis (Core i7-3970X)'s cooling fans to shoot air upwards and take advantage of heat's natural tendency to rise.

There's just as much activity on the front panel as there is on the inside. The very top houses a compartment that pops open to reveal two USB 3.0 ports, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 800 port, and headphone and microphone jacks. Beneath that are four analog knobs for controlling four of the system's six cooling fans, and each one sports a corresponding blue LED that glows when its respective fan is humming. Below that is an empty 5.25-inch bay that can accommodate an additional optical drive to complement the Genesis (Core i7-3970X)'s 14X Blu-ray burner directly underneath it. There's a clear window under the Blu-ray burner that shows off the system's Ice Dragon liquid coolant, and seeing the viscous, milky-white fluid percolate makes for a very cool visual flourish (a refill kit is also included). Further down still is a 40-in-1 card reader and a cabinet that opens to reveal four vacant 3.5-inch bays to accommodate any additional hard drives. These bays can conveniently be popped open from the front of the system, which bypasses the need to pop open the chassis when adding an additional internal hard drive.

A slew of additional ports are housed in the rear. There are four USB 3.0 ports, six USB 2.0 ports, a pair of Ethernet ports, another FireWire 800 port, and an optical connection for digital 7.1 surround sound. The Genesis (Core i7-3970X) also has multi-monitor support, and each of its 4GB Nvidia GTX 690 GPUs sport two VGA outputs and a micro-HDMI port.

Popping open the chassis can be done easily and without tools. Two push-buttons on the rear allow users to easily pop off the left and right sides of the chassis. Inside, there's an impressive array of hardware that's been arranged in a remarkably clutter-free manner that highlights the meticulous craftsmanship behind the Genesis (Core i7-3970X). As one can imagine, the system's 1.2 Kilowatt Corsair AX1200i PSU generates plenty of heat, so it utilizes six fans to maintain an optimal temperature. Complementing the fans' efforts are the thick green tubes pumping liquid coolant directly to the system's GPUs, CPU, and its fans. The end result is a system running at breakneck speeds without risking overheating. At the same time, though, the six fans are very loud, even when the user disables four of them via the front-panel knobs. Throughout my testing, the incessant whirring of the Genesis (Core i7-3970X)'s fans was difficult to ignore. Ultimately, this isn't a big deal, but if you've got roommates, be sure to expect some noise complaints. The Genesis (Core i7-3970X)'s 16GB RAM is distributed through four 4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 modules, which leaves four vacant sockets for additional RAM upgrades.

Calling the Genesis (Core i7-3970X)'s storage capacity "abundant" arguably qualifies as the understatement of the year. In addition to packing a pair of 240GB Corsair Neutron GTX SSD's in RAID 0 configuration (to provide a quick platform for running your OS and programs), it also sports a 1TB 7,200rpm HDD. Since Origin is a boutique vendor, the Genesis (Core i7-3970X) doesn't ship with any preloaded software except an OS (Windows 7 Home Premium) and CyberLink PowerDVD 12 Ultra for media playback.

Along with the remote control, there's also an additional SLI connector, spare cables, and a USB flash drive loaded with system recovery data. Moreover, for an extra $49 you can get a Microsoft Xbox 360 wireless controller with an internal PC receiver. Our review unit is covered by a three-year warranty on parts. It also has lifetime coverage for both labor and 24/7 tech support, as well as Origin Nexus, which is free in-game technical support service.

Performance
Origin Genesis (Core i7-3970X) Unsurprisingly, the Genesis (Core i7-3970X) blazed through our benchmark tests. At the same time, however, it belongs to a class that's inhabited solely by benchmark blazers, so our amplified expectations must be calibrated accordingly. For the most part, it did quite well. It led the class with a PCMark7 score of 6,584, giving it a slight edge over the Maingear Shift Super Stock (Core i7-3930K) (6,501) and the Maingear F131 SS (GTX Titan) (6,522 points). Likewise, its Cinebench R11.5 score of 14.49 points topped the chart, with the Origin Genesis (i7-3930K) (14.23 points) and the Maingear Shift Super Stock (Core i7-3930K) (13.98 points) nipping at its heels.

The Genesis (Core i7-3970X) had no difficulty tearing through our multimedia tests. It completed our Handbrake video-encoding test in 20 seconds, which is six seconds faster than both the Maingear F131 SS (GTX Titan) and the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan). Its slight advantage persisted in our Photoshop CS6 test (2 minutes 24 seconds), where it once again outpaced by the Maingear F131 SS (GTX Titan) (2:35) and the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan) (2:41) by similarly thin margins. All said. classifying the Genesis (Core i7-3970X) as "gaming rig" is something of an oversimplification, as its impressive hardware is equally adept at ripping through even the most demanding of multimedia-creation tasks.

The Genesis (Core i7-3970X) ran through our 3D benchmark tests without breaking a sweat. Its performance in our 3DMark11 tests at Entry-level settings (27,617 points) led the entire pack, with the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan) trailing close behind (27,196 points) while the Maingear Shift Super Stock (Core i7-3930K) scored 24,337 points. In Extreme settings, however, the Genesis (Core i7-3970X) (12,212 points) came second only to the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan) (12,505).

Origin Genesis (Core i7-3970X)

The Genesis (Core i7-3970X) is clearly a powerful beast. But where didn't beat the competition was in the most important are?our gaming tests. Objectively speaking, its ability to churn out triple-digit frame rates in even the most demanding of settings was impressive. However, the Genesis (Core i7-3970X)'s pair of 4GB Nvidia GTX 690 GPUs in SLI configuration was simply no match for the two and three Nvidia GeForce GTX Titans in SLI configuration found on the Maingear F131 SS (GTX Titan) and the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan). respectively. Accordingly, the Genesis (Core i7-3970X)'s performance in our Aliens Vs. Predator test (238fps in medium quality at 1,366-by-768 resolution; 195fps with the settings maxed out at 1,920-by-1,080 resolution) fell short of the Maingear F131 SS (GTX Titan) (457fps and 182fps, respectively) and, to a greater extent, the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan) (508fps and 222fps, respectively). The same goes for the Genesis (Core i7-3970X)'s performance on our Heaven benchmark tests (260fps in medium quality at 1,366-by-768 resolution; 186fps with the settings maxed out at 1,920-by-1,080 resolution), where it was bested by the Maingear F131 SS (GTX Titan) (288fps and 155fps, respectively) and the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan) (336fps and 198fps, respectively). Ultimately, the Genesis (Core i7-3970X)'s frame rates are impressive in their own right, and you will get a smooth gaming experience with virtually any game you play today. However, if you're shelling out over seven grand for a high-end gaming rig, you'll want the ability to brag that you own the top dog.

The Origin Genesis (Core i7-3970X) is an all-around impressive system. Its killer design, cutting-edge components, and remarkable performance on nearly any task make it worthy of serious consideration. That said, though, the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan) outguns it on the all-important gaming grid by virtue of its more potent GPU configuration while sporting a lower price tag, and for these reasons the Falcon NW system's reign as our newest Editors' Choice for high-end gaming desktops continues. Still, the Genesis (Core i7-3970X) has plenty of good going for it?especially its killer feature set?and is worth looking into if raw performance alone isn't your modus operandi.

Trauma Can Up Risk of Mental Disorders in First Responders ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on February 27, 2013

Trauma Can Up Risk of Mental Disorders in First RespondersA new study suggests repeated exposure to traumatic events increase the risk of developing a psychiatric disorder among protective service workers, especially for those early in their careers.

Overall, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that protective services workers do not appear to have a higher prevalence of mental health problems than workers in other occupations.

The critical factor appears to be exposure to trauma, as only those with repeated contact to violence or suffering have an increased likelihood of developing psychiatric problems. A hardening effect also appears to occur as contact with trauma among well-experienced protective services worker is less harmful.

?Our findings suggest that exposure to diverse types of traumatic events among protective services workers is a risk factor for new onset of psychopathology and alcohol use disorders,? said Christopher N. Kaufmann, M.H.S., lead author of the study.

?When we examined the relationship of exposure to common traumas with the development of mood, anxiety and alcohol use disorders among protective services workers, we found that these workers were at greater risk for developing a mood or alcohol use disorder.

?Interestingly, this relationship was not seen in those who had been in these jobs for a longer period, but was strong and statistically significant in workers who recently joined the profession. Developing curricula in coping skills and providing timely interventions for early career protective services workers may help reduce future psychiatric morbidity in these workers.?

Using data from the U.S National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions researchers compared the prevalence of mental disorders of protective services workers to that of adults in other occupations.

In addition, they examined the association of exposure to common traumatic experiences with the development of new mood, anxiety and alcohol use disorders among protective services workers who recently joined the workforce and those who had been in these jobs for a longer period.

Lifetime and recent trauma events most commonly reported by protective services workers included: seeing someone badly injured or killed; unexpectedly seeing a dead body; having someone close die unexpectedly and having someone close experience a serious or life-threatening illness, accident or injury.

?The association between the number of different traumatic event types and incident mood and alcohol-use disorders, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder, was virtually confined to the group of early career protective services workers,? said Ramin Mojtabai, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., senior author of the study.

?Future research should examine the coping skills of protective services workers who have been in these jobs for many years, which might make them less likely to develop psychiatric complications in the face of various potentially traumatic experiences, ? said Mojtabai.

The authors note, ?Special support programs and services for these early career workers can potentially help to prevent development of chronic psychopathology and attrition from these critical jobs.?

There are some familiar NBA names lighting up college basketball courts this season.

Curry, Hardaway, Hawkins, Howard, Mason and Robinson.

Below the sons of six former NBA players who are having strong seasons this year. And there are often shades of their fathers' games in their play, whether it's their knack for scoring in bunches, knocking down 3-pointers, playing with a tough-nosed style or wearing the same jersey number.

___

Seth Curry, Duke ? This family is known for the ability to shoot the 3, starting with Dell Curry during 16 NBA seasons starting during the late 1980s. Next came son Stephen's rise from Davidson to the Golden State Warriors. Now there's Stephen's younger brother Seth, a 6-foot-2 senior for the Blue Devils. He has been the top outside threat to complement Mason Plumlee inside. Curry has rarely practiced this year due to persistent pain in his right shin, but he's averaging about 17 points and shooting nearly 44 percent from 3-point range entering the week. Maryland coach Mark Turgeon put it simply after Curry scored 25 against his Terrapins earlier this month: "Seth Curry is a winner and he makes big shots."

___

Tim Hardaway Jr., Michigan ? The 6-6 junior guard and son of the former NBA all-star has been part of the Wolverines' 1-2 punch playing alongside sophomore guard Trey Burke. Hardaway is second on the team in scoring (15 points) and shooting about 40 percent from 3-point range. He's also been one of Michigan's top defenders and scored his 1,000th career point this season. He's reached double figures in 20 of 26 games this year, highlighted by a 23-point performance with six 3-pointers against Ohio State.

___

Corey Hawkins, UC Davis ? The son of former NBA guard Hersey Hawkins entered the week averaging 20.5 points and 5.7 rebounds. Hawkins was also shooting about 47 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc. The 6-3 sophomore is an Arizona State transfer and had a school-record 40 points at Hawaii in January to follow in his high-scoring father's footsteps at Bradley, where Hersey Hawkins is the school's all-time leading scorer and ranks seventh in Division I history with 3,008 career points. In Hersey's senior year, he averaged 36.3 points and scored 63 in a game. "One thing he always told me is be able to get into the lane and finish around the bigs," Corey Hawkins said. "... Not being that tall, you have to find ways to finish in the paint. He helped me a lot with that."

___

Juwan Howard Jr., Detroit ? The 6-6 sophomore is the son of the former Michigan "Fab Five" member who played in the NBA nearly two decades. Juwan Jr. transferred from Western Michigan and sat out the Titans' NCAA tournament appearance last year, but he's started nearly every game and averaged about 9 points and 3.6 rebounds this season heading into Tuesday's game against Loyola of Chicago. He's also shooting 39 percent from 3-point range and 82 percent from the foul line in a supporting role behind high-scoring guard Ray McCallum Jr. as Detroit tries to return to the NCAAs.

___

Antoine Mason, Niagara ? The son of former NBA all-star Anthony Mason has been the top threat for the Purple Eagles, averaging a team-high 18.9 points while playing 36 minutes per game entering the week. The 6-3 redshirt sophomore recently returned from a four-game absence due to an ankle injury, but has scored in double figures in 31 straight games. Mason wears the same number (14) and carries the same nickname ("Mase") as his father. Coach Joe Mihalich said Mason has a "fearlessness" and is "an incredible competitor." Sound familiar? "I was sensitive to the pressures that a kid would feel when your dad's an NBA player," Mihalich said. "I said to his dad, 'Listen, I'm trying hard not to compare him to you. I don't want him to feel that pressure.' His dad was cool. He was like, 'Nah, go ahead, you can do that.' And it was a good thing to do because it does help young Mase respond. It motivates him."

___

Glenn Robinson III, Michigan ? Hardaway isn't the only Wolverine on the list. This 6-6 freshman forward is the son of the Purdue All-American and former NBA all-star known as "Big Dog." Robinson is fourth on the team, averaging about 11 points on 57 percent shooting to go along with 5.5 rebounds as an every-game starter. Robinson matched his season-high with 21 points on 6-for-6 shooting while pulling down 10 rebounds in a win against Penn State on Feb. 17. He had managed just six points in the previous two games, but said his confidence never wavered. "A lot of people know I like to cut to the basket," Robinson said. "They kind of sag off me and those open shots weren't there, but I've got to keep adjusting to that and keep working on it at practice."

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Lindsay Lohan is going in for some therapy - but unfortunately it's with Charlie Sheen.

The actress will play herself in an April episode of Sheen's FX sitcom "Anger Management." She will be treated by Sheen's character, a therapist, and the two develop a romantic relationship.

Sheen and Lohan also recently worked together in the upcoming "Scary Movie 5," also set to debut in April.

Their relationship isn't merely professional: In November, Sheen's publicist told TheWrap that he gave Lohan $100,000 to help pay her taxes.

Lohan, who recently appeared in Lifetime's "Liz & Dick," also appears in the upcoming film "The Canyons."

Pope changes conclave rules, allows earlier start if all cardinals in Rome before 15-day delay

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI has changed the rules of the conclave that will elect his successor, allowing cardinals to move up the start date if all of them arrive in Rome before the usual 15-day transition between pontificates.

Benedict signed a legal document, issued Monday, with some line-by-line changes to the 1996 Vatican law governing the election of a new pope. It is one of his last acts as pope before resigning Thursday.

The date of the conclave's start is important because Holy Week begins March 24, with Easter Sunday March 31. In order to have a new pope in place for the church's most solemn liturgical period, he would need to be installed by Sunday, March 17 ? a tight timeframe if a conclave were to start March 15.

Asteroid-Smashing Mission Picks Space Rock Target

A mission that aims to slam a spacecraft into a near-Earth asteroid now officially has a target ??a space rock called Didymos.

The joint European/U.S. Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment mission, or AIDA, will work to intercept Didymos in 2022, when the space rock is about 6.8 million miles (11 million kilometers) from Earth, European Space Agency officials announced Friday (Feb. 22).

Didymos is actually a binary system, in which a 2,625-foot-wide (800 meters) asteroid and a 490-foot (150 m) space rock orbit each other. Didymos poses no threat to Earth in the foreseeable future.

The proposed asteroid-smashing AIDA mission will send one small probe crashing into the smaller asteroid at about 14,000 mph (22,530 kph) while another spacecraft records the dramatic encounter. Meanwhile, Earth-based instruments will record so-called ?"ground-truthing" observations.

The goal is to learn more about how humanity could ward off a potentially dangerous space rock. The necessity of developing a viable deflection strategy was underlined in many people's minds by the events of last Friday (Feb. 15), when the 130-foot (40 m) asteroid 2012 DA14 gave Earth a historically close shave just hours after a 55-foot (17 m) object exploded above the Russian city of Chelyabinsk, injuring 1,200 people and damaging thousands of buildings.

The AIDA impact will unleash about as much energy as that released when a big piece of space junk hits a satellite, researchers said, so the mission could also help improve models of space-debris collisions.

"The project has value in many areas, from applied science and exploration to asteroid resource utilization," Andy Cheng, AIDA lead at Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory, said in a statement.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has asked scientists around the world to propose experiments that AIDA could carry in space or that could increase its scientific return from the ground. Researchers have until March 15 to pitch their ideas.

Johns Hopkins? Applied Physics Laboratory is providing AIDA's impactor, which is called DART (short for Double Asteroid Redirection Test). The observing spacecraft is known as AIM (Asteroid Impact Monitor) and will come from ESA.

Wattana Khamchu
The Nation February 23, 2013 1:00 am

The SFT in association with the Community Potential Foundation on Thursday held a seminar entitled "Marohso Chantarawade and Comrades: Siam rebels or Pattani hero warriors?"

Wattana Wan, representative of the Turn Left Organisation, said the clash on February 13 in Narathiwat, which left 16 insurgents dead with no casualties among security officials, has sparked local hatred against state officials and caused many people to join the insurgency.

He said condemning any party would not bring about solutions. The insurgency is triggered by a group of people upset about past incidents and the establishment of the Thai state, he said, adding that the rebels don't want to be ruled by the state.

"I suggested that the government withdraw all troops from the area and let the locals decide what kind of administration they want,'' Wattana said.

Artef Sohko, coordinator of Youth for Development, said the government cannot deny that there has been a liberation movement organised by some local people against the Thai state.

"Wednesday's clash left 16 insurgents dead. Even though they were defeated, they have won public sympathy,'' he said.

After beating the people of Pattani long ago, the Thai government has been trying to change the local residents. "If you ask locals there, you will know what they want,'' he said.

He disapproved of the government's enforcing of Article 21 of the security law to allow insurgents to enter into plea-bargaining arrangements and to undergo training for six months, saying the best solution is to go to the negotiable table.

Chalida Thacharoensak, a representative of Community Potential Foundation, said that at the root of the insurgency is discrimination against locals through the enforcement of the emergency decree and security laws.

"Locals know what is happening. The state cannot achieve victory by deploying hundreds of thousands of troops there. It is time to tell the truth. At the same time, the warriors should call for a truce and enter peace talks for the sake of the community,'' she said.

Scottish researchers handed crucial role in search for prostate cancer answers

Researchers from the Universities of Glasgow, Strathclyde and Dundee have today received a share of ?691,000 to drive forward the search for answers to key questions that continue to surround prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men.

Scottish institutions will therefore receive three of the 17 grants Prostate Cancer UK is awarding as part of the first wave of funding through the charity?s ambitious new research strategy.

As part of its MANifesto, Prostate Cancer UK has pledged to find answers to some of the most important research challenges facing the disease today. The charity is injecting a colossal ?11 million into research this year alone to focus on the key areas of understanding risk, improving diagnosis of the disease and improving treatment options for men living with it.

Dr Iain Frame, Director of Research at Prostate Cancer UK, said: ?Due to a long legacy of underfunding and neglect we still know shockingly little about why prostate cancer kills 10,000 men every year. Prostate Cancer UK has vowed to scale up its mission to deliver so much more and so much better for men. By funding ground breaking projects such as these with the UK?s top research scientists we hope to be able to find the answers we so desperately need for the future.

?Thanks to the support of the Movember Foundation, Prostate Cancer UK has recently tripled its research spend to up to ?25million over the next three years. While this provides a fantastic launch pad, we desperately need more money to crack this disease once and for all. Through our recently launched Sledgehammer Fund we are calling on everyone across the country to get behind men and help us in this mission. Together we can, and will, beat prostate cancer.?

Professor Rob Mairs from the University of Glasgow?s Institute of Cancer Sciences has received ?205,000 to improve radiation treatment by directly targeting prostate cancer cells. He said: ?Although radiotherapy is widely used in the treatment of prostate cancer, damage to neighbouring tissues and organs limits the dose which patients can receive. With the support of key funding from Prostate Cancer UK, we will develop a more targeted approach to radiotherapy, which will offer a more effective treatment of prostate cancer which has spread to other areas of the body. This new treatment plan, which involves the use of a new ground-breaking drug, will help reduce the risk of normal tissue damage.?

Mr Ghulam Nabi, Senior Lecturer in surgical uro-oncology at the University of Dundee, has received ?237,000 to investigate whether new ultrasound techniques could be used to diagnose prostate cancer and identify whether it is aggressive or not. He said: ?Current ultrasound techniques cannot reliably locate cancer within the prostate and MRI?s are not accurate enough to identify aggressive from benign cancers. Men must therefore endure an invasive biopsy to obtain a diagnosis. Thanks to this grant from Prostate Cancer UK our researchers have the opportunity to trial new and innovative ultrasound techniques to better identify cancerous tissues in the prostate, as well as helping to better determine whether a tumour is aggressive or benign. We hope that as a result we will be able to help more men to be diagnosed faster and more accurately in the future.?

Professor Simon Mackay, from the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Science at the University of Strathclyde, has received ?249,000 to develop a new ground-breaking drug to treat advanced prostate cancer. He said: "We have developed a new drug-like compound which could help improve life expectancy for men with advanced prostate cancer over and above the six months associated with the present 'gold standard' - chemotherapy drug, docetaxel. We are delighted that this new Prostate Cancer UK grant enables our researchers to continue to develop a new drug candidate ready for clinical trials, building on earlier funding from Cancer Research UK.?

The grants were awarded via a competitive process, and were subject to detailed assessment from external peer reviewers and the Prostate Cancer UK Research Advisory Committee.? All 17 of the projects to receive funding were chosen because of their extremely high quality and relevance to men with prostate cancer.

(AP) ? Quiet most of Speedweeks, Dale Earnhardt Jr. made a little noise Saturday.

Earnhardt topped the speed chart for the final practice session before Sunday's season-opening Daytona 500.

The 2004 Daytona 500 champion turned the fast lap by averaging 198.592 mph around the 2? -mile superspeedway. David Gilliland was second, followed by Clint Bowyer, Marcos Ambrose and Aric Almirola.

Pole-sitter Danica Patrick and Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Tony Stewart were among 10 drivers who skipped the 1? -hour final tuneup. Patrick is trying to become the first driver win the Daytona 500 from the pole since Dale Jarrett in 2000. Only nine drivers have accomplished the feat in 54 years.

Three-time Daytona 500 winner Jeff Gordon, 2010 Daytona 500 champ Jamie McMurray, Casey Mears, Terry Labonte and Joe Nemechek also sat out the session. So did Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth.

"We don't have any plans to go out," Gordon said. "We feel like this entire week we have been able to learn everything we need to get prepared for the race tomorrow. ... We've got a great race car. We are excited. We've got a great opportunity here."

Before Saturday, Earnhardt had done little during Speedweeks. He finished eighth in the Sprint Unlimited and ninth in his qualifying race. He will start 19th in the "Great American Race," his lowest opening spot in 14 years at NASCAR's premier event.

His speed in the final practice had to boost the team's confidence.

Almirola, however, posted the best 10-lap average. He averaged 196.195 mph over 10 laps on new tires. Earnhardt was sixth on that chart.

"We are excited about this weekend and feel like we have a good car and got it driving good in that last practice session," Almirola said.

The final session involved little bump-drafting and even less side-by-side action ? no doubt because teams were leery of wrecking race cars about 24 hours before the Daytona 500.

Defending Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski provided the most action when he hit a bird.

"I killed a Tweetie bird," said Keselowski, one of auto racing's top Tweeters.

Keselowski was 17th in the final practice.

"This is our 500 engine, so trying to get an idea of how it's going to perform," he said. "My car is really good. Definitely faster than what it was, so that's good, right? I'm definitely optimistic."

Of the teams that didn't practice, most of them valued keeping their car intact over incremental gains that could be found so late in Speedweeks.

Patrick, Stewart, Gordon and the Gibbs cars have been some of the fastest all week.

Tunisia's new premier promises inclusive government

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisia's prime minister-designate Ali Larayedh, a hardliner from the main Islamist Ennahda party, said on Friday he hoped to form a "government of all Tunisians", but opposition leaders swiftly signaled discontent.

Tunisia plunged into political crisis on February 6 when the assassination of secular opposition politician Chokri Belaid on February 6 ignited the biggest street protests since the overthrow of strongman Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali two years ago.

President Moncef Marzouki asked Larayedh to draw up a government within two weeks after he was formally nominated for prime minister by Ennahda leader Rached Ghannouchi.

"We will start consultations to form a new government ... a government of all Tunisians," Larayedh said in brief remarks after meeting the secular president.

He urged political parties, trade unions, businessmen and journalists to support his government to achieve the objectives of the North African country's revolution and build democracy.

Ennahda's choice for prime minister raised hackles among opposition parties, some of whom accuse Larayedh's Interior Ministry of failing to curb Islamist violence, although he is credited for acting firmly against al Qaeda-linked militants.

"The decision deepens the crisis because Larayedh headed the ministry responsible for the killing of Belaid and violence that has spread throughout the country," said Zied Lakhdar, a leader in the Popular Front, in which Belaid was secretary-general.

The Interior Ministry and Ennahda have denied they had any hand in Belaid's killing, which they have condemned.

Mahmoud Baroudi, a leader of the secular Democratic Alliance opposition party, said Larayedh's appointment would aggravate tensions and increase anger in the streets.

"He was responsible for leniency with Islamist violence against human rights activists," he said, blaming Islamists for disrupting opposition meetings and assassinating Belaid.

No one has claimed responsibility for Belaid's killing.

JAILED UNDER BEN ALI

Ennahda is the biggest party in the National Constituent Assembly with 89 of its 217 seats. Marzouki's secular Congress for the Republic party (CPR), the second largest with 29 seats, has already said it will join a new Ennahda-led coalition.

Larayedh, 57, is viewed as part of Ennahda's hardline wing, which rejects any role for parties linked to the Ben Ali era.

A maritime engineer, Larayedh spent 15 years in jail under Ben Ali. He became interior minister when the previous government was formed in December 2011.

Outgoing Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, who resigned on Tuesday, refused to head the next government after his own Ennahda party rejected his plan for an apolitical technocrat cabinet to prepare for elections.

He was seen as a moderate overruled by Ghannouchi, who says the last election gave Ennahda a popular mandate to rule in a power-sharing deal with moderate secular parties.

"Larayedh is not a man of consensus," said Nejib Chebbi, leader of the secular Republican party. "He failed during his work as head of the Interior Ministry."

Tunisia, whose transition from autocracy has so far been far less violent than those in neighboring Libya and Egypt, faces rifts between Islamists and their opponents that threaten the stability of its fledgling democracy and ailing economy.

Political uncertainty has put negotiations on a $1.78 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund on hold and prompted Standard and Poor's to lower its long-term foreign and local currency sovereign credit rating on Tunisia on Tuesday.

While Ennahda and Marzouki's CPR together would wield a narrow majority in the assembly, Larayedh may seek additional partners. The leftist Ettakatol party, which joined Jebali's government, has not said if it will serve under Larayedh.

Hechmi Hamdi, leader of the moderate Islamist Popular Petition party, which holds seven assembly seats, said his group would stay in opposition, accusing Larayedh of responsibility for the death of two prisoners on hunger strike and the torture and ill-treatment of protesters in the restive Siliana region.

Mayweather sings praises of his new Showtime deal

DETROIT (AP) ? It's Showtime in more ways than one for Floyd Mayweather Jr., who said Thursday he is excited about both a weekend fight he's promoting as well as his lucrative new deal with the CBS-owned network.

Mayweather, who was in Detroit for a news conference ahead of Saturday's junior middleweight title bout between Cornelius "K9" Bundrage and Ishe Smith, likened his Showtime agreement to a matrimonial modification.

"I got a divorce," a smiling Mayweather said of leaving HBO, his longtime television home. "I'm married again."

"I couldn't have asked for a better deal," he said.

The sport's biggest star and moneymaker announced Tuesday that he'll fight Robert Guerrero on May 4 on Showtime, a move that shook up the boxing universe. Mayweather's move is a coup for Showtime, which long has trailed HBO in boxing prominence.

Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) said his new revenue-sharing deal could include up to six pay-per-view bouts over 30 months, a much faster pace than to which he's become accustomed.

The 147-pound champion, who hasn't fought since beating Miguel Cotto on May 5, has fought just four times since December 2007.

"The fans want to see a lot more of me," Mayweather told reporters at the MGM Grand Detroit. "I will give you excitement."

Mayweather, who turns 36 on Sunday, was there to support Saturday's card at the nearby Masonic Temple Theatre as well as Smith, his friend and sparring partner from Las Vegas, who is vying for his first-ever professional title.

The news event was testy with supporters of Bundrage and Smith screaming at each other and scuffling at one point inside one of the casino-hotel's conference rooms.

Mayweather was all smiles, putting his arm around Smith and chatting amiably with Stephen Espinoza, executive vice president and general manager of Showtime Sports, who called the deal one "which we're very, very proud of."

Mayweather, who grew up in Grand Rapids, Mich., said he began training for the Guerrero fight Wednesday by running in the gym of Ottawa Hills High School in his hometown.

"This is a guy I know I can't overlook," Mayweather said of Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs), the WBC's interim welterweight champion.

Manny Pacquiao had been Mayweather's only rival in recent years, though he had a pair of losses in 2012. Asked Thursday about a possible future fight with the Filipino, Mayweather pointed to the "crucial knockout" he suffered at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez in December.

"If people don't know, Floyd Mayweather's not scared of (any) opponent," Mayweather said. "You just don't wake up overnight and just become (the best) pound-for-pound (fighter). And sometimes people talk about my legacy. If my legacy was based upon just one fight, then I didn't need to fight 43 fights."

Shifting to his upcoming fight, Mayweather promised an entertaining bout with Guerrero.

"Call your local cable company, because it's Showtime, baby," he said.

Interactive Tablet Advertisements: Business Development or ...

nexus10-anglesEditor?s note: This is a guest post by Jack Becht, Co-Founder and Director of BULLETT Magazine?s Interactive Digital Publication for Tablet.

Pitching marketing teams on the benefits of interactive tablet advertisements often leaves me with this nagging feeling that I?ve been talking to the wrong people. Marketing professionals are quick to assess tablet advertisements according to the same analysis they might otherwise apply to print advertisements, and in doing so miss the most important point of all: tablet advertisements are not instruments designed to promote a future sale- they are e-commerce platforms unto themselves. The idea of advertisements as self-monetizing assets presents a platform for analysis that would require a level of scrutiny that is often beyond the considerations of a marketing department. ?Here?s why:

The traditional value scheme associated with print advertisements is anchored in the notion that time spent within an advertisement will result in ad memory, which will translate into ad activation. Companies go to great lengths to prolong the amount of time spent within their print advertisements. They abandoned black and white images for color. They include clever slogans and photos. They apply high gloss finishes, print on unique papers, offer scratch and sniff interactive features- all with the intent of catching your attention, getting you to remember something, and increasing the likelihood of a purchase down the line. This is a fundamental pillar of print advertising and the essential lifeline of most print publications.

Then comes the tablet asset, which is really more of a pop-up store within a publication than it is advertisement. Rather than printing photos using a CMYK color palate, these advertisements are suffused with millions of colors, and often accented by backlit retina display. They are animated, include video and scrollable text frames, utilize interactive display functions, and provide a platform for multiple photo galleries within a single page. Finally, they are shopable. By linking these 360 branding experiences to e-commerce platforms, brands may now skip the middle man that is ?ad activation?, and can direct traffic directly to a point of sale. ?This is not an advertisement. This is a storefront, and it deserves the attention of anyone who might otherwise analyze the potential for returns on such an investment. This kind of thing should land on the desk of a VP of business development, with bus dev budgets at play. It should not fall within the purse or purview of a junior marketing associate.

So when consulting with big brands, and talking CRMs and circulation and added value and all of the other fun topics associated with ad sales, I often pack up my ipad a little more convinced that I?d be doing a whole lot more business were it not for the now antiquated infrastructure of traditional ad buys. The playing field has shifted, and its companies like mine, and I would imagine many others out there, that strive to educated marketing teams beyond the capacities of their own departments such that business might be conducted, literally pushing the industry forward against about a hundred and fifty years worth of foundational knowledge and corporate asset allocation.

So how do we break past the marketing teams? Further, if I were a senior strategist advising both bus dev and ad sales, could I rationally broker a dual-budgetary purchase of native in-design files with no sense of context or placement? Who will advise me on how and when to use my tablet asset, and where will I get the money to place it in the high value publications? What if the submission specifications between competing interactive publications are not yet harmonized? Who will adapt my files for submission? ?Is it really worth the trouble?

With all these considerations, the business of interactive asset development is without a doubt one of the more interesting and entirely unexpected challenges that interactive tablet publications have afforded us.

Residents in this swath of sprawling Chicago neighborhoods and suburbs have brimmed with loyalty to Jesse Jackson Jr. over the past 17 years, giving him an enthusiastic majority each election ? even after questionable links to ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich, reports of an extramarital affair and a bizarre five-month medical leave.

But the former congressman's guilty plea to charges that he lived off and lavishly spent campaign money for personal use ? on everything from toilet paper to mink capes ? has turned the tide. In territory where it was difficult to scrape up any criticism of Jackson, his Chicago alderman wife or his famous civil rights leader father, the mood is now simply one of disappointment.

"He knew better; it was a very stupid thing to do," said 75-year-old Jeannette Reese, shaking her head as she grocery-shopped at a busy shopping complex. "He and his father came to our church. I thought he was the real thing."

Reese said she had voted for the younger Jackson for years.

Jackson, who resigned from office in November, pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court in Washington to criminal charges that he engaged in a scheme to spend $750,000 in campaign funds on personal items. He faces up to 57 months ? more than four years ? in prison and a fine, under a plea deal with prosecutors.

It was an emotional day for Jackson, 47, who held back tears as he addressed the federal judge, just hours before his wife pleaded guilty to filing false joint federal income tax returns that knowingly understated the income the couple received. She faces up to two years in prison and a fine.

"I did these things," Jackson told the judge, adding later, "Sir, for years I lived in my campaign."

Jackson first won office in a 1995 special election and developed widespread support from mayors who said he delivered and constituents who valued his family legacy and said he gave them a voice. That support persevered even through an intense primary challenge last year from former one-term U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson who made Jackson's ethical troubles central to her campaign. He came away with the easy majority even as he remained under a House Ethics Committee investigation for ties to Blagojevich, who's serving a federal prison sentence on allegations that he tried to profit from President Barack Obama's former U.S. Senate Seat.

Even the most loyal Jackson supporters who praised him for bringing home nearly $1 billion in federal funding to the district were rattled.

"I hate that circumstances ended up like they did," said Ford Heights Mayor Charles Griffin. His small community south of Chicago ? one of Illinois' poorest ? got a boost in its water system because of Jackson.

Still, Griffin did not want to pile on criticism. "His situation is between the court system and the family," the mayor said.

Next week, voters in the heavily Democratic district head to the polls in a special primary to replace him. The crowded field of candidates includes Halvorson, former state Rep. Robin Kelly and Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale.

Jackson is scheduled to be sentenced June 28 and his wife on July 1. Both Jacksons, who maintain homes in Washington and Chicago, are free until sentencing.

More details emerged in a 22-page statement compiled by prosecutors and filed Wednesday. In it, Jackson admitted that he and his wife used campaign credit cards to buy thousands of personal items worth $582,772.58 from 2005 through April of last year. The most lavish purchases included the spending of more than $43,000 on a gold-plated men's Rolex watch.

Court papers said more than $60,000 was shelled out for restaurant, nightclub and lounge outings. Money was also spent on a washer, a dryer, a range and a refrigerator for the Jacksons' Chicago home.

Jackson even arranged for the use of campaign money to buy two mounted elk heads for his congressional office, according to court documents.

Jackson entered the courtroom Wednesday holding hands with his wife and looking a bit dazzled as he surveyed the packed room. He kissed his wife and headed to the defense table.

After the hearing he shouted to a reporter: "Tell everybody back home I'm sorry I let them down, OK?"

The Chicago Democrat disappeared from the public eye last June for a medical leave, though details on his condition and location were always scarce. Doctors later said he suffers from bipolar disorder and was hospitalized at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

His attorney said after the court appearance that Jackson's health is "not an excuse" for his actions, "just a fact." Jackson's father has said that his son remains under strict medical supervision.

One attorney, Reid Weingarten, told reporters after the hearing that there's reason for optimism.

"A man that talented, a man that devoted to public service, a man who's done so much for so many, has another day," he said. "There will be another chapter in Jesse Jackson's life."
