Scientists may have solved a longstanding mystery about the origin of the energetic particles that cause Earth's dramatic aurora displays.

"People have been thinking this region is tiny," lead author Jan Egedal of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said in a statement. But now, he added, "we?ve shown it can be very large, and can accelerate many electrons."
Egedal and his colleagues analyzed data gathered by various spacecraft, including the European Space Agency's four Cluster probes. They also performed simulations using a supercomputer called Kraken at the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.
Kraken has 112,000 processors working in parallel. The team used 25,000 of these processors for 11 days, following the motions of 180 billion simulated particles in space to map out how aurora-generating electrons move.
The researchers determined that these electrons are likely being rocketed to their tremendous speeds in the magnetotail, a portion of Earth's protective magnetosphere that has been pushed far into space by the solar wind.
As the solar wind ? the million-mph stream of charged particles coming from the sun ? stretches Earth's magnetic-field lines, the field stores energy like a rubber band being stretched, Egedal said. When the normally parallel field lines reconnect, that energy is released like a rubber band being snapped, and electrons are propelled back toward our planet at fantastic speeds.
When these fast-moving electrons hit molecules in Earth's upper atmosphere, the impact generates the phenomenon that we know as the northern and southern lights.
Some physicists had viewed this origin story for the aurora-causing electrons as improbable, because they didn't think the active magnetotail region was big enough to generate the huge numbers of electrons that slam into Earth's atmosphere.
Egedal and his team found, however, that the region is likely plenty big ? roughly 1,000 times larger, in fact, than theorists had thought possible.

Last week, I spent a few days at a casino resort in California. While I expected the weekend to be busy, I was surprised at how crowded it was on Thursday night and Friday morning.
Every time I set foot into the casino, the place was humming with activity. On several trips to the poker room, tables were full and I had to wait to be seated.
Even at 4:30 AM, as I passed through on the way to Starbucks before catching my ride to the airport, the electronic sounds of slot machines in use filled the room.
The restaurants were always crowded.
Regardless of what you think of the economy, it?s hard to deny that casinos aren?t only surviving, but thriving.
In Las Vegas, gambling revenue was up 5.1% in 2011. Macau, where a lot of American casinos have investments, is even hotter, with revenue soaring 42% in 2011.
Bet With the House
I used to love to gamble. Blackjack was my game. But then I learned how to play poker and the appeal of trying to beat the house vanished. Now, if I lose my money at the poker tables, I can only blame myself (or the superior play of an opponent). The odds aren?t stacked against me from the moment I sit down.
Imagine if you could bet with the house instead of playing against it. Well, you can by investing in the right gaming stocks.
The best way to bet with the house, in my opinion, is Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS). Las Vegas Sands owns the Venetian and Palazzo in Las Vegas and five properties in Macau, the gambling capital of Asia.
Las Vegas Sands has been coming up in my proprietary S.T.A.R.S. system, ? a stock-picking model that utilizes supercomputing power. The technology behind S.T.A.R.S. was designed by the same programmer who created programs for some of the largest and most successful quantitative hedge funds in the world.
S.T.A.R.S. identified Las Vegas Sands in early January due to its 17.6% annual growth rate in book value and quarterly earnings, which have doubled in the past year. I recommended the stock in The Oxford Systems Trader, my research service that uses S.T.A.R.S., at $48.36. The stock is up 17% since then, although the June calls I recommended at the same time are up 80%. That compares with a 5.5% rise in the S&P 500 during the same period.
Even though we?re already up on the stock, Las Vegas Sands remains my favorite casino stock going forward.
Bet Against the House
Usually, you don?t want to bet against the house. But in one case, a company?s director is. Wynn Resorts (Nasdaq: WYNN) is having a dust-up with a member of its board of directors.
Kazuo Okada, the Director and the company?s largest shareholder, is upset that the company made a $135-million donation to the University of Macau and has asked management for access to the books. Management has refused. Okada is suing the company in order to be allowed to examine the company?s books. And now the SEC is involved, launching an ?informal inquiry? into the donation.
So you have someone on the board of directors who has to sue the company in order to be to allowed to look at the company?s books, and the SEC gets involved. In the financial community, that?s what?s known as ?not good.?
This weekend, Wynn pulled a stunning move, accusing Okada of improper payments to gambling regulators and forcibly buying back his 20% stake in the company at a 30% discount to the market, and asked Mr. Okada to resign.
Okada has vowed to fight the forcible sale of his stock.
It raises a lot of questions. Why would the company not permit one of its own board members to see internal documents? A director is responsible to shareholders. Management has a fiduciary duty to its shareholders. They?re supposed to be on the same team.
Granted, managements and boards don?t always see eye to eye, but the goal should always be enhancing shareholder value.
Something smells rotten here and I think it?s only a matter of time before the whole story gets out. And when it does, I suspect shares of Wynn will be worth a lot less than they are now.
Casino stocks, which have performed nicely since the beginning of the year, should continue to do well as the economy improves. But even with gamblers at the tables, Wynn is likely going to crap out.

A smart collar which closely monitors the health of cows and sends the results back to farmers using mobile phone technology is being developed as part of a three-year-project co-funded by the Technology Strategy Board.
The Technology Strategy Board has given a substantial grant towards the 1.4 million project to develop the technology, which could make huge savings for farmers. It is the result of a joint project between The University of Strathclyde, Morrisons, Scottish Agricultural College (SAC), NMR, Harbro, Well Cow and Embedded Technology Solutions (a Strathclyde spin-out company) who are developing the technology.
The equipment involves each cow wearing an intelligent collar that picks up on subtle movements with the same sensor used in Wii gaming and generates a continuous record of their activity patterns.
Results will then be sent back using a range of wireless technologies like 3G, with a full update accessible via a hub or even through a mobile phone. It is envisaged that farmers can set up alerts for their phone to receive a text when a cow is in distress, coming in to heat or entering labour.
Wireless technology means that the signal from the cow's collar would be accessible from anywhere, so farmers can check on their cattle's status using their phone wherever they are.
It will provide vital improvements in the important areas of cow illness and streamline the insemination process.
By accurately sensing the cow's head positions in three dimensions, the collar will be able to detect if the animal's hind legs begin to lower one of the initial signs of illness.
The sensor on the collar will also detect when a cow is coming into heat and alert the farmer so he can optimise the process of insemination, increasing cow pregnancy rates. Without this technology, close monitoring of each cow, which can take hours every day, is required to look for the signs of heat.
With both efficient insemination and cow health crucial for farm profitability the development could help to sustain the financial future of farms.
The collar technology is now entering its next phase thanks to a grant from the Technology Strategy Board and a commitment by Morrisons to provide its farm at Dumfries House in Scotland for the testing of the technology.

This exciting project will contribute to all of these themes. Researchers at Northwestern University have developed a new method for chemically altering graphene, a development that could be a step toward the creation of faster, thinner, flexible electronics.
Highly desired for its many promising attributes, graphene is a one-atom thick, honeycomb-shaped lattice of carbon atoms with exceptional strength and conductivity. Among graphene's many possible applications is electronics: Many experts believe it could rival silicon, transforming integrated circuits and leading to ultra-fast computers, cellphones and related portable electronic devices.
But first, researchers must learn how to tune the electronic properties of graphene -- not an easy feat, given a major challenge intrinsic to the material. Unlike semiconductors such as silicon, pure graphene is a zero band-gap material, making it difficult to electrically "turn off" the flow of current through it. Therefore, pristine graphene is not appropriate for the digital circuitry that comprises the vast majority of integrated circuits.
To overcome this problem and make graphene more functional, researchers around the world are investigating methods for chemically altering the material. The most prevalent strategy is the "Hummers method," a process developed in the 1940s that oxidizes graphene, but that method relies upon harsh acids that irreversibly damage the fabric of the graphene lattice.
Researchers at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science have recently developed a new method to oxidize graphene without the collateral damage encountered in the Hummers method. Their oxidation process is also reversible, which enables further tunability over the resulting properties of their chemically modified graphene.
The paper, "Chemically Homogeneous and Thermally Reversible Oxidation of Epitaxial Graphene," will be published Feb. 19 in the journal Nature Chemistry.
"Performing chemical reactions on graphene is very difficult," said Mark C. Hersam, professor of materials science and engineering at the McCormick School. "Typically, researchers employ aggressive acidic conditions, such as those utilized in the Hummers method, that damage the lattice and result in a material that is difficult to control.
"In our method, however, the resulting graphene oxide is chemically homogeneous and reversible ? leading to well-controlled properties that can likely be exploited in high-performance applications," said Hersam, who is also a professor of chemistry and of medicine.
To create the graphene oxide, researchers leaked oxygen gas (O2) into an ultra-high vacuum chamber. Inside, a hot tungsten filament was heated to 1500 degrees Celsius, causing the oxygen molecules to dissociate into atomic oxygen. The highly reactive oxygen atoms then uniformly inserted into the graphene lattice.
The resulting material possesses a high degree of chemical homogeneity. Spectroscopic measurements show that the electronic properties of the graphene vary as a function of oxygen coverage, suggesting that this approach can tune the properties of graphene-based devices. "It's unclear if this work will impact real-world applications overnight," Hersam said. "But it appears to be a step in the right direction."
Next, researchers will explore other means of chemically modifying graphene to develop a wider variety of materials, much like scientists did for plastics in the last century.
"Maybe oxygen isn't enough," Hersam said. "Through chemical modification, the scientific community has developed a wide range of polymers, from hard plastics to nylon. We hope to realize the same degree of tunability for graphene."

Earlier this week the Girl Scouts, which turns 100 this year, released an interesting report on teenage girls? attitudes toward science and math. Some highlights:
74 percent of girls ages 14 to 17 report an interest in science, technology, engineering or math (known as STEM)
Parents play a major role in getting their kids interested in these subjects. Two-thirds of the girls who reported an interest in science, math or engineering had mothers or fathers who encouraged these interests, as compared to only one-third of girls who reported little interest in STEM. This is true of both genders, as the role of parents has come up a lot in similar studies, particularly this one by Jon D. Miller of the University of Michigan.
Hispanic and African-American girls report an even higher interest in STEM than caucasian girls.
There is a gap between girls? interest in STEM subjects and their desire to pursue a career as a scientist or engineer. The No. 1 career choice of science-interested girls was medicine/healthcare, which does not technically qualify as a STEM career. Arts/design, followed by social science, entertainment, and communications/media were the next four most popular choices. Physical/life sciences came in sixth place, with 57 percent of STEM-interested girls placing it first. Among non-science-interested girls, arts/design and entertainment were the two top career choices.
Why the gap? Peer pressure and gender stereotypes may play a role, as 57 percent of all respondents said girls their age don?t typically consider a career in science or in technical fields. Also, many girls may not be making the connection that a science career can help them achieve their goals. According to the report, girls want a career that will allow them to help people (94 percent of STEM-interested girls; 83 percent of non-STEM) and to make a difference in the world (92 percent of STEM-interested girls; 82 percent of non-STEM).
Studies like this are a reminder to all adults, and especially to parents, that they are responsible for introducing kids to the full breadth of what they can do with their lives. Let?s remind kids to give equal weight to literature, the arts and math and science.
Here are a few activities that can get you started right away:
Help scientists make discoveries about the structure of the eye.
Help marine biologists study?whale songs.
Build a simple or more complex bridge.

In today?s world, you can look just about anywhere and see at least one person talking on a cell phone; sadly, the road is no exception. More and more drivers are taking to the roads with cell phones to their ears; as a result these drivers are causing a greater risk for automobile accidents. Of course, we all know the consequence of increased automobile accidents ? increased automotive insurance.
Despite the statistics conveying the relationship between drivers using cell phones and a percentage of automobile accidents, many drivers continue to chat while driving, and many of those drivers will be involved with another driver who is using a cell phone will driving. When you?re involved in an automotive accident, regardless of the cause, your automotive insurance rates usually increase. If you are at fault and it?s determined you were using a cell phone at the time of the accident? Let?s just say your automotive insurance company won?t be happy.
If you are one of the drivers who likes to gossip using your cell phone while driving, stop. Nothing is so important that you must risk your life, and the lives of others, in order to tell your best friend, your significant other, or your sister or brother. Even if you?re a parent and, while on your way home from work, remember you must tell your spouse to pick up the kids from school ? pull over.
If you are a parent with teens who are driving, or almost ready to drive, instill the responsible habit of not using a cell phone while driving. They are even less experienced drivers than their elders, and don?t need the extra distraction.
Remember, practicing the safe driving habit of not using a cell phone will driving will not only help you lower, or keep low, your automotive insurance rates, but it will also help you keep yourself, and others, from being seriously injured and even killed.

Amber Portwood is taking a step in the right direction -- even if it's not the direction she wanted.
A drug court in Madison County, Ind., signed off on a deal that will allow the "Teen Mom" star to avoid prison provided she completes a drug-treatment program and stays out of trouble.
But Portwood, who's been locked up since before Christmas, is not heading to her grandparents' house, as she hoped.
Instead, Judge David Happe determined that she should dry out at Sister 2 Sister Ministries halfway house in Anderson, a transitional residence for women getting out of jail.

"I understand you've been in jail for a while, and you're frustrated," Happe said, according to the local Herald Bulletin. "But the last thing we want to do is release you and have you commit another offense."
But Portwood doesn't even get to go to the halfway house just yet -- she will remain behind bars until the Sister 2 Sister staff is able to evaluate her, probably on Monday or Tuesday.
