Mike Robbins: Nothing Changes Until You Do

In a recent session with my counselor Eleanor, she said something simple but profound to me: "Nothing changes until you do." She went on to say, "Mike, you keep trying to control and manipulate the situations, relationships, and outcomes in your life -- thinking that if they changed in the way you want them to, you'd then change and things would be better. It actually works the other way around."

The truth of Eleanor's feedback resonated deeply with me and I've been contemplating it for the past few weeks. I realize that much more of my attention than I'd like to admit is focused on my attempts to change the circumstances, situations, and people around me -- instead of focusing on the only thing I can really change, me.

As Dr. Wayne Dyer says, "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."

We've all had this experience in our lives in both big and small ways. Do you ever notice how when we're having a bad day or a rough time in life, even the people and activities we normally love don't bring us the same amount of joy, fulfillment, and satisfaction? On the flip side, when we're having a great day or things are going really well in life, even people or circumstances that might normally upset or annoy us somehow seem much more manageable and less stressful. In those simple situations, our perspective and our own internal state have a big impact on how we experience life, not the other way around.

What if we put more attention on our own growth, change, and transformation -- and less attention on trying to fix, change, and alter the people and circumstances around us? This doesn't mean that we'd stop caring about what other people do or say. It also doesn't mean we wouldn't give feedback or make requests of those around us. And, we wouldn't stop working towards specific changes, goals, and dreams related to the most important aspects of our lives -- our work, our health, our finances, our family, and more.

However, by letting go of our insatiable desire to fix and change everyone and everything around us, we give ourselves the space to focus our attention on the true source of our own happiness, success, and fulfillment -- ourselves!

As we come to the end of this first month of the new year, many of us are still quite focused on our intentions, goals, and resolutions for 2013. As great as the accomplishment of any specific goal may be, what we're almost always after with our resolutions, is positive and sustainable change.

As the saying goes, "The roots create the fruits." This means that it's our job to focus on our own growth, development, and internal transformation -- and in so doing, we put ourselves in the best possible position to create the kind of change we truly want. Nothing changes until we change!

ABC would like you to 'Bet on Your Baby' - Zap2it

melissa-peterman-gi.jpgABC has greenlit a new game show in which parents make wagers on the actions of their toddlers. It's called "Bet on Your Baby."

The actual show, mercifully, sounds far less "Hunger Games"-ish than the title might imply. Hosted by Melissa Peterman (ABC Family's "Baby Daddy," "Reba"), the show will feature five sets of parents and their children, aged 2 to 3 1/2, in each episode (so it's more "Bet on Your Toddler"). Each family plays a self-contained game in which the parents wager on the actions their kid will take next.

In other words, there's no tot-vs.-tot competition. All five families then return for a "college round" and the chance to win $50,000 for their children's education -- which, by the time the kids are old enough to attend college, might pay for a semester or two.

ABC has ordered eight episodes of the show. It's set to premiere in April.

Post-Election Environmental Update: Preparing for 2013 and ...

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? January 30, 2013 ? (RealEstateRama) ? Looking ahead, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has committed to an aggressive regulatory agenda and is poised to take action in all program areas?taking up issues like stormwater runoff, fly ash reuse, and the disturbance of lead paint in buildings.? The rulemaking pipeline is full, and the construction and real estate industries are positioned to feel the brunt over the next four years. ?Fortunately, AGC is working year round to keep EPA in check and remains closely engaged with the Agency on nearly a dozen pending rules, all projected to have significant impacts on construction jobs and the economy.? AGC will continue to push for sound, fact?based, decision?making at all levels of government.

During the Obama administration?s first term, EPA issued the 2012 Construction General (Stormwater) Permit, tighter national air standards for particulates and nitrogen dioxide, first-time controls on greenhouse gas emissions from mobile and stationary sources, and new federal emission/notification requirements for stationary Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines (RICE).? AGC represented the construction industry?s interests in all of these legal proceedings and provided contractors with information on how to get into compliance, once the rules went final.

Moreover, at a time of great economic stress, AGC was successful in pushing the administration to re-examine (and slow down on promulgating) a host of additional environmental rules that would have increased the cost of critical construction projects and threatened jobs ? without commensurate environmental benefits.? (Most notably, EPA delayed implementation of a ?numeric limit? on the amount of dirt the federal government will allow in stormwater from construction sites.) ?In the months heading to the election, movement on much-anticipated national rulemakings ? like requirements on the use/disposal of fly ash ? was slowed to a halt.

Now that the election is past us, EPA has reactivated its regulatory efforts.? ?Following are some of the most significant rulemakings in the works.? Click here for a PowerPoint slide view of this list.??

  • Effluent Limits for Construction Site Runoff ? The original effluent limitations guidelines rule for the ?Construction and Development Industry? (C&D ELG) was issued in December 2009 and contained a controversial numeric discharge limit for turbidity. ?EPA subsequently stayed this requirement. EPA recently announced that it will propose a new rule by April 2013 (final by Feb. 2014) to formally withdraw the turbidity limit and to clarify the ?non-numeric? portion of the 2009 C&D ELG rule. ?New construction activities can expect evolving requirements governing stormwater discharges; any new C&D ELG requirements would be incorporated on a rolling basis into state permits as they expire and are renewed.? See related Observer article.
  • Stormwater Discharges from Developed Sites ? EPA has long regulated stormwater discharges from active construction sites but most recently has begun to focus its attention on stormwater discharges from already developed sites. EPA is on track to propose a national rule that would set new performance standards for managing stormwater discharges from newly developed and re-developed sites; require first time retrofit requirements on stormwater systems ? which could include mandates on cities to change existing buildings, stormwater sewers, and streets; and mandate the use of ?green infrastructure? techniques (like ?green roofs,? rain gardens, permeable pavement) to replace conventional stormwater management practices. There remain questions about EPA?s authority to mandate restrictions on stormwater flow (as opposed to limits on pollutants in stormwater), but we can expect to see a proposed rule by the summer of 2013 and a final rule is due out by December 2014.? See related Observer article.
  • Definition of ?Waters of the United States? ? After the U.S. Supreme Court decisions in SWANCC and Rapanos, the scope of ?waters of the US? subject to federal control and permitting under the Clean Water Act (CWA) has been an issue of considerable debate and uncertainty. In May 2011, EPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued draft guidance on the courts? decisions that would effectively increase the agencies? jurisdiction over construction work in nearly all ?wet? areas. ?AGC expressed concerns over the scope of the guidance and urged the agencies to pursue a rulemaking.? A proposed rule is in the works that would revise the regulations that define ?waters of the Unites Sates? and, as such, clarify which bodies of water (or their conveyances) are subject to CWA Section 404 permitting provisions.? It is not clear when, or if, this proposed rule or the guidance document will be published. ?See related Observer article.
  • Chesapeake Bay Clean-up Plan ? EPA has been working with the states to implement an extensive clean-up plan (Total Maximum Daily Load or TMDL) for the Chesapeake Bay, finalized back in 2010.? Key components of that plan are water quality trading programs to be in place by the end of 2013.? EPA will likely use the Bay TMDL and associated trading programs ?model? in the Mississippi River Basin and in other areas with impaired waterbodies; therefore, every step taken in the Bay will determine how similar programs will be adopted nationwide.? Farming and development groups have joined wastewater agencies in defending EPA against recent threats to the legality of its water quality trading (cap and trade) programs.? Industry, state and agency representatives as well as many environmental groups support these trading programs, mostly because of their potential to manage the costs of the Bay clean-up plan while still seeing reductions in pollutants entering the Bay. ?See related Observer article.
  • Ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) ? EPA is scheduled to tighten the ozone (smog) NAAQS in 2013.? By EPA?s own estimates, the ozone standard the agency is considering would cost $90 billion a year and would push a large portion of the country into non-attainment status for the first time.? A nonattainment status under the Clean Air Act carries serious repercussions for construction in the area(s) so designated ? including potential restriction on the use and operation of equipment, the loss of federal highway funding and the loss of economic development opportunities. See related Observer article.
  • Revised PM2.5 NAAQS ? EPA recently revised the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) NAAQS.? These changes to the PM2.5 NAAQS come on top of the recent years? tightening of the SO2 and NO2 NAAQS. Combined, these new and stricter standards are likely to increase the difficulty of permitting new and expanded facilities.? EPA anticipates attainment/nonattainment designations to be in place by early 2015.? State-level clean-up plans will include enforceable emission reduction requirements that will increase compliance costs for both mobile and stationary sources.? See related Observer article.
  • Fly Ash Reuse? EPA continues to evaluate whether or not to regulate coal combustion residuals (CCRs) as hazardous waste, which could cost industry $79 to $110 billion over 20 years.? EPA?s latest reports are that it cannot finalize a rule on how it will regulate coal ash until at least 2014. Industry also awaits the results of EPA?s investigation into the beneficial use of coal ash in construction?in response to an Inspector General report that found EPA promoted recycling of the waste without assessing the potential risks of using those materials.? In 2012, EPA faced pressure both from Congress and the courts.? Lawmakers tried unsuccessfully to pass legislative that would require EPA to regulate the waste as nonhazardous, and two groups initiated lawsuits urging EPA action. See related Observer article.
  • Lead-Paint Work Practice Rules ? EPA is currently considering how to expand and strengthen the federal ?Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting? (LRRP) rule to cover construction work that disturbs lead paint in/on the exteriors and interiors of public and commercial buildings. ?EPA plans to finalize its approach by the end of 2016.? EPA recently published a request for information and notice of a public hearing to gather information on renovation activities and possible lead hazards in public and commercial buildings. The hearing will be held on June 26, 2013.? Comments are due by April 1st.? See related Observer article.
  • Climate Change ? According to the Agency?s ?regulatory plan? released in late 2012, EPA will continue to use the Clean Air Act to develop greenhouse gas (GHG) standards for both mobile and stationary sources ? against AGC?s objections. The Administration also has renewed its commitment to explore what actions it can take to reduce GHG emissions across the board.? EPA currently regulates the largest facilities that emit GHGs, but the Agency will consider regulations of medium-sized and smaller facilities by 2016.? Critics argue that the regulatory requirements are strict enough to stop the building of any new facilities, especially power plants.? What is more, the rules would cause the prices for any kind of power to skyrocket.? Many are concerned that EPA will proceed to issue regulations, industry by industry, until virtually every aspect of the American economy is constrained by strict regulatory requirements and high energy prices. See related Observer article.

Significantly, many of the pending rules listed above are the result of ?sue and settle? agreements ? i.e., out of court ?closed door? settlements between EPA and environmental/activist groups.? Such agreements recently have come under fire for going around the public participation and transparency protections of the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) and for prompting EPA to issue more economically significant regulations than would otherwise be written.

Also worth noting is that President Obama?s environmental agenda will face budget cuts for the third straight year.? The proposed EPA budget for fiscal year 2013 is $8.3 billion, down from $9 billion last year. This year?s request represents a 1.2 percent decrease, or $105 million, from the 2012 enacted level.

Vote on ?12bn nuclear waste store

A vote is to be held later on whether to go ahead with a search for a site to store high level nuclear waste.

Executive members of Cumbria County and one of either Allerdale or Copeland Borough Councils must agree if "Stage 4" of the process is to go ahead.

This would include detailed geological investigations and discussions over the social and economic implications.

Even if the ?12bn underground repository is approved, construction is not expected to begin before 2025.

Cumbria is the only area still considering such a facility.

Dungeness in Kent, which had initially shown interest, withdrew at the end of 2012 in the face of opposition from residents.

'Potential shadow'

Currently, radioactive waste is stored above ground in various "long-term temporary" sites around the UK, mostly at Sellafield in Cumbria.

Unions representing workers in the nuclear industry have expressed support for studies to go ahead.

Garry Graham, deputy general secretary of Prospect, said: "Not only does the vote have vast implications for the economic wealth of West Cumbria, which relies so heavily on the nuclear industry for jobs and growth, it potentially casts a shadow over any nuclear renaissance in the UK."

However, the Lake District National Park Authority is concerned that an underground nuclear waste repository would impact negatively upon the tourist industry, which is currently worth an estimated ?2bn annually.

Cumbria County Council and Copeland Borough Council vote at 10:00 GMT, and Allerdale Borough Council at 15:00 GMT.

Professional training 'in the wild' overrides laboratory decision preferences

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Many simulation-based studies have been conducted, and theories developed, about the behaviors of financial market traders. New work by human factors/ergonomics (HF/E) researchers suggests that decision-making research on the behavior of traders conducted "in the wild" (i.e., real-world situations) can offer an alternative lens that extends laboratory insights and provokes new questions.

In their article in the Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making, "Understanding Preferences in Experience-Based Choice," authors Claire McAndrew (University College London) and Julie Gore (University of Surrey) examined the gap between the decision-making preferences of financial traders "in the wild" compared to laboratory experimentation where the probabilities of outcomes are known (prospect theory).

The authors conducted in-depth interviews about past financial trading decisions with eight traders to understand how decisions were made. All participants were employed by firms authorized and regulated by the UK Financial Services Authority and had, on average, 10.9 years of experience. The traders' decision-making processes were tracked step by step, focusing on their risk-seeking or risk-adverse behavior with respect to the probability of gains and losses.

"What we found is that professional training provides distinct objectives and goals that override preferences generated in the laboratory," said McAndrew. The study found that traders were risk adverse to three of the four scenarios compared with only two of four in the same scenarios suggested by prospect theory.

"Recognition of the interplay of the professional, task, and environment are clearly documented, which is often simply not possible in laboratory settings," said McAndrew. Whereas laboratory studies can be designed to emulate real-world conditions, trading markets are complicated and dynamic systems. The shifting, ill-defined, or competing issues that characterize trader environments are difficult to reproduce in laboratory studies. Many previous lab-based studies on financial traders could be augmented by "in the wild" examination.

This insight into real-world decision-making behavior has consequences for the design of instructional training for novices and has the potential to minimize costly mistakes. Changes in professional training might extend to other complex sociotechnical systems, such as aviation, the military, and nursing -- domains where experts, like stock traders, are similarly risk averse except when faced with large-probability gains.

Forbes: Man U first team worth over $3B

updated 6:36 p.m. ET Jan. 28, 2013

(Reuters) - English Premier League soccer club Manchester United are the world's first professional sports team to be valued at more than $3 billion, according to Forbes Magazine.

A recent surge in the club's shares after a poor start when they were offered on the New York Stock Exchange last year has boosted Manchester United's value to $3.3 billion, a report on Forbes's website said on Monday.

The increase has United, English champions a record 19 times, comfortably ahead of the world's second-most valuable sports team, the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys, worth $2.1 billion.

Forbes put the surge in United shares down to brighter earnings prospects from new sponsorship deals and said the demand could continue given the team's potential for lucrative payouts in the EPL and Champions League.

United, who claim to have 659 million followers worldwide, are owned by the American Glazer family who retained a tight grip on the club after the flotation on the New York Stock Exchange.

United shares closed 41 cents lower at $16.48 in New York on Monday.

Monti repeats backing for Bank of Italy over Monte Paschi

ROME (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti repeated his backing on Monday for the Bank of Italy over its handling of a scandal at Monte dei Paschi and welcomed signs that the troubled bank was looking for new capital and investors.

Chairman Alessandro Profumo, appointed last year to turn Monte dei Paschi around, told a newspaper on Sunday that his bank was looking for a long-term investor, a project which Monti endorsed.

"It makes sense to say that it needs more capital," he said during a talk show on Italy's La7 television channel.

Monte Paschi, Italy's third-largest bank and the world's oldest, is fighting for its future after revealing losses of up to 720 million euros ($970 million) from complex derivatives and structured finance transactions between 2006-2009.

The Bank of Italy approved on Saturday Monte dei Paschi's request for 3.9 billion euros of state aid in the form of bonds to be issued by the end of February.

The aid should guarantee the Tuscan bank's immediate funding needs, but has fuelled speculation that it could end up under full state control if it cannot turn the situation around.

On Monday, MPS shares surged more than 6 percent at the open as investors focused on the prospect of a change of control at the bank.

"The return of interest from investors can, in our view, be associated with the possibility of radical changes in governance that the current earthquake at the bank may trigger in the medium term," ICBPI bank said in a broker's note.

The deepening turmoil goes back to its 9 billion euro cash acquisition of rival Banca Antonveneta in 2007, just before the global financial crash.

Monti repeated his backing for the Bank of Italy and its former governor Mario Draghi. Draghi, who is now President of the European Central Bank, was in charge of supervision when the deals in question were made.

"I want to confirm my full confidence in the Bank of Italy and in those who are in charge of it and who have been in charge of it," he said.

As well as the pressure on the Bank of Italy, the issue has also entered the campaign for national elections on February 24-25 because of the close links between the bank and local politicians from the centre-left Democratic Party (PD).

The PD is leading in the opinion polls and rivals have sought to link the party to the scandal. ($1 = 0.7421 euros)

Guest Post: Baines & Ernst ? Helping People Out Of Debt Since 1996

?

Unmanageable debt can be an excruciating burden to carry alone and constantly trying to juggle creditors can be quite simply exhausting, especially if you aren?t entirely sure of how to handle the problem.

Professional debt management firms can provide an invaluable service, bringing expertise and much-needed relief to individuals unable to cope with their financial problems.

However, although many debt management firms do a first-class job, like any industry, there are a few whose standards are not as high as they should be. But with so many companies offering debt management services, how can you decide who you should trust?

Baines and Ernst ? part of the award-winning Paymex Group, have been providing debt management services since 1996 and, to date, have helped more than 140,000 people escape the pressures of debt. During this time, they have created professional relationships with more than 3,500 different creditors, making it potentially far smoother to try and negotiate a debt solution for individuals who are struggling to meet their commitments.

However, their longstanding history and excellent track record in helping individuals is only part of the story.

In any kind of financial services, it can be comforting to discover that a company is willing to follow a voluntary code of conduct, which ensures not just quality of service, but commitment to ethical practices.

DEMSA ? the Debt Managers Standards Association ? is a perfect example of this. The organisation was established almost 12 years ago and was set up to protect the interests of all parties involved in debt management negotiations ? both the lenders and members of the public.

DEMSA?s own published mission statement declares that they aim to ?encourage the highest standards within the debt management industry? and that all members of the public must not only be treated ?ethically? but also ?compassionately and effectively.?

Any member company which belongs to DEMSA must ensure that the customer?s interests are paramount at all times and that solutions which would be unsuitable or inappropriate are not recommended. Information provided to the customer must be clear and transparent without the unnecessary use of jargon.

The Office of Fair Trading has recently published guidelines about what it expects from the industry, setting out good practice for companies involved in providing debt advice. DEMSA has a code of conduct that all of its members must rigorously adhere to and this has been given the seal of approval by the OFT.

A debt management firm must apply to belong to DEMSA and membership is dependent on several factors, but in particular, adherence to the code, both on application and for the duration. DEMSA will carry out audits to ensure that all member firms continue to comply with the requirements and will take steps to discipline or eject any firms found failing to meet the standards.

Therefore, for any individual seeking to find a reputable debt management firm where they can be assured of receiving the best possible advice, it?s recommended that they choose a DEMSA member such as Baines & Ernst.

Baines & Ernst has played a pivotal role in the financial industry ? helping people with all levels of debt find a way to conquer their financial troubles.

As part of the Paymex Group, their excellence in this area has been recognised formally when the group was awarded ?Debt Management Provider of the Year 2010? and 2011 and 2012 finalists, at the prestigious Insolvency and Rescue Awards.

Having unmanageable levels of debt can be a very difficult situation to deal with. By picking a company such as Baines and Ernst, who are accredited members of DEMSA, you can be sure you will receive a sympathetic response, as well as the best practical help available, from the experts you really can trust.

Feds: Disabled students must be allowed to play sports | Lake ...

Posted by admin in Outdoor & Sports on January 26th, 2013 | no responses

By Phillip Elliott, AP

WASHINGTON ? Students with disabilities must be given a fair shot to play on a traditional sports team or have their own leagues, the Education Department says.

Disabled students who want to play for their school could join traditional teams if officials can make ?reasonable modifications? to accommodate them. If those adjustments would fundamentally alter a sport or give the student an advantage, the department is directing the school to create parallel athletic programs that have comparable standing to traditional programs.

?Sports can provide invaluable lessons in discipline, selflessness, passion and courage, and this guidance will help schools ensure that students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to benefit from the life lessons they can learn on the playing field or on the court,? Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a statement announcing the new guidance Friday.

The groundbreaking order is reminiscent of the Title IX expansion of athletic opportunities for girls and women four decades ago and could bring sweeping changes to school budgets and locker rooms for years to come.

Activists cheered the changes.

?This is a landmark moment for students with disabilities. This will do for students with disabilities what Title IX did for women,? said Terri Lakowski, who for a decade led a coalition pushing for the changes. ?This is a huge victory.?

It?s not clear whether the new guidelines will spark a sudden uptick in sports participation. There was a big increase in female participation in sports after Title IX guidance instructed schools to treat female athletics on par with male teams. That led many schools to cut some men?s teams, arguing that it was necessary to be able to pay for women?s teams.

Education Department officials emphasized they did not intend to change sports traditions dramatically or guarantee students with disabilities a spot on competitive teams. Instead, they insisted schools may not exclude students based on their disabilities if they can keep up with their classmates.

Federal laws, including the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, require states to provide a free public education to all students and prohibit schools that receive federal money from discriminating against students with disabilities. Going further, the new directive from the Education Department?s civil rights division explicitly tells schools and colleges that access to interscholastic, intramural and intercollegiate athletics is a right.

The department suggests minor accommodations to incorporate students with disabilities onto sports teams. For instance, track and field officials could use a visual cue for a deaf runner to begin a race.

Some states already offer such programs. Maryland, for instance, passed a law in 2008 that required schools to create equal opportunities for students with disabilities to participate in physical education programs and play on traditional athletic teams. And Minnesota awards state titles for disabled student athletes in six sports.

Increasingly, those with disabilities are finding spots on their schools? teams.

?I heard about some of the other people who joined their track teams in other states. I wanted to try to do that,? said Casey Followay, 15, of Wooster, Ohio, who competes on his high school track team in a racing wheelchair.

Current rules require Followay to race on his own, without competitors running alongside him. He said he hopes the Education Department guidance will change that and he can compete against runners.

?It?s going to give me the chance to compete against kids at my level,? he said.

Some cautioned that progress would come in fits and starts initially.

?Is it easy? No,? said Brad Hedrick, director of disability services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and himself a hall-of-famer in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. ?In most places, you?re beginning from an inertial moment. But it is feasible and possible that a meaningful and viable programming can be created.?

Consider Multiple Banking Accounts to Budget for Various Needs and Wants

Consider Multiple Banking Accounts to Budget for Various Needs and WantsMost people seem to have a single checking and a single savings account. My wife and I take it a bit further by putting our emergency fund in a separate online-only checking account, but family financial weblog The Fun, Cheap, or Free Queen suggests having no less than seven bank accounts for a family.

Their seven accounts include an emergency savings and regular savings account, separate checking accounts for the household, husband, and wife, health savings account, and a slush fund. Most budget-savvy families have buckets for each of these expenditure categories, but if you're horrible at sticking to a budget perhaps having the money diverted in this many accounts may be a helpful tool.

To see how each account is used within the family budget and how much is allocated to each account, check out the source link below. Keep in mind that there can be incentives for opening an account a new bank?we earned a $200 bonus deposit for using the debit card for our new account 5 times within the first month and keeping track of multiple accounts can be easily accomplished using Mint. Review: Parker | People's Critic: Film Reviews - seattlepi.com

Can an action movie with Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte, Michael Chiklis, Wendell Pierce (The Wire), and Bobby Canavalle (Boardwalk Empire) be bad? The answer: Parker.

Stop me if you?ve heard this before ? A thief is double-crossed by his crew, left for dead, and is out for revenge because of his ?principles? or ?code?.? That?s the synopsis for Parker and 75 other straight to DVD action films.

The real question: How is this even possible with a cast that?s adequate enough to pull off a robbery/revenge film? Despite the film?s unusually long opening that include numerous flashbacks, it opens with action movie clich?s that work:

  • Multiple disguises to pull off a heist
  • Criminal with rules teamed up with a hothead criminal
  • Tear away priest disguise (one of my favorites)
  • Double cross-left for dead combo
  • The line ?It?s not about the money?
  • Sneaking out hospital by pretending to be a doctor as police come in to question you (bonus point for recovering from life threatening injuries faster than Wolverine)
  • Stolen ambulance getaway
  • Using hospital kit to treat your wounds (bonus points for administering your own IV)
  • Switching cars (bonus point for multiple car switches)
  • ?It?s bigger than we thought. It goes all the way to the top? speech (bonus for understanding Nick Nolte)

A collage of clich?s matched with Statham?s action movie pedigree should at least be entertaining. Sadly, Parker falls short by underutilizing its good actors, not allowing Statham to do what he does best, and force feeding a Jennifer Lopez storyline that?s pointless and uninteresting. Great actors like Wendell Pierce and Bobby Canavalle are minor players in a film that desperately needs their talents. Allowing Pierce and Canavalle to flex their acting chops could only help keep the S.S Parker from sinking. Instead, their screen time is taken up by a J-Lo and Statham?s version of House Hunters in West Palm Beach.

Even with the predictable plot and the film?s star players sitting the bench, Parker doesn?t start to spin out of control until we?re introduced to Leslie, played by Jennifer Lopez, the broke real estate agent who?s recently divorced ? or as I like to call her Ms. Unnecessary. The middle of the film focuses entirely too long on her story and why she?s in this predicament. ?Newsflash: People paying $10 to see Jason Statham bring the pain do?not?care about sad real estate agents that get their cars get repossessed. Well, unless they shoot up the guy coming to take the car ? then things might get interesting.

Leslie?s relationship with Parker is ambiguous at best. It?s unclear is she?s motivated to get out of her situation or if she?s hot for Parker ? at least until Leslie has the sad face when Parker?s almost always topless girlfriend shows up. What makes their relationship even more bizarre is seeing Parker and Leslie exchange a passionate kiss after the first part of the movie establishes Parker?s relationship with his girlfriend and her dad (Nick Nolte) as being important. The whole thing is almost as confusing as Statham?s cartoonish southern accent.

The best scene in Parker comes at the the finale. Despite the film?s faults, the final showdown versus the gang is why people love casting Statham in these roles. He?s perfect for those few ?minutes. The action sequence is right in his wheelhouse of over-the-top kills that involve?gun-play, broken bones, and funny one-liners. ?Those 10 minutes are exactly what Parker should?ve been for 85 minutes.

There are a lot of things wrong with Parker. Was it the film?s four endings? The plot points to nowhere? The bad dialogue? 75% of Michael Chiklis dialogue is him screaming, ?Paaaaaaaaaaaarkkkkkeeeerrrrrr?? ?Or Nick Nolte needing subtitles. The truth is we?ve seen Statham as the criminal with a conscious a bit too often and maybe this one trick pony has run its course.

Google applies for license to build experimental wireless network at Mountain View

Google applies for license to build experimental wireless network at Mountain View

Google's learned quite a lot about internet provision through its wired Fiber service, and now it appears to be preparing a localized wireless network. El Goog has solicited the FCC for a license to built an "experimental radio service" at its Mountain View lair, which uses bands that current consumer devices don't. As the WSJ notes, Google's old buddy Clearwire holds the keys to the 2524-2625MHz range it'll occupy, and wireless networks using these frequencies are currently under construction in China, Brazil and Japan. The initial hub for the service is planned to be within the building that houses the Google Fiber team -- perfect fuel for speculation that big G wants to create its own network (possibly in cahoots with Dish), and one that's not confined to its HQ. Right now, it's just a document, so we'll have to wait and see how this develops. Even if it ends up going nowhere, it's not like the search behemoth doesn't have the money to flirt with whatever it wants.

Palestinian president wants Israelis to talk peace

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? The Palestinian president will invite Israeli politicians to the West Bank to try to make sure peacemaking is on the new government's agenda, a senior official said Thursday, as a top Israeli hard-liner proposed sidelining the polarizing issue.

Hoping to capitalize on the unexpected strength of moderates in Israel's incoming parliament, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas wants to sit down with representatives of Israeli parliamentary factions to discuss the possibility of settling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict peacefully, senior Palestinian official Yasser Abed Rabbo told The Associated Press.

"We invite the Israeli parties, particularly the new ones, for dialogue on future accords," Abed Rabbo said.

He did not say when the invitations would go out, but emphasized that Abbas wanted the meeting to take place before Israel forms its next government ? a process that is expected to take several weeks.

Tuesday's parliamentary vote ended in a surprise near deadlock between a hawkish, religious bloc that earned 61 seats in the 120-seat parliament and a camp of centrist, secular and Arab parties that earned 59, according to final results announced Thursday.

While Benjamin Netanyahu, as head of the largest single party in parliament, appears set to remain prime minister, he'll have a very hard time putting together a stable coalition without drawing in moderates beyond his traditional hardline and religious base. Technically, he could garner a 61-seat majority without reaching across the aisle, but such a coalition would be very difficult to maintain and would not be able to pursue reforms Netanyahu has pledged. He has already extended his hand to a new centrist party that advocates more serious efforts to end the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Peace talks reached an impasse before Netanyahu came into office four years ago and never resumed in earnest. The main obstacle during his tenure has been continued construction of Jewish settlements in areas captured in the 1967 war, the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Israel pulled out of the Gaza Strip in 2005 but still controls access by land, sea and air.

Abed Rabbo said the Palestinians have not dropped two longstanding conditions for negotiations ? Israel must stop settlement building and the contours of the Palestinian state must be negotiated on the basis of the borders Israel held before 1967.

While opinion polls indicate a majority of Israelis back the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, peacemaking was barely mentioned as a campaign issue, reflecting widespread doubts that peace is possible after decades of violence and stop-and-go talks.

Still, the election's outcome defied forecasts that Netanyahu and his allies would steer a government with an even more hard-line makeup.

Instead, his top partner is likely to be Yesh Atid, a new party with moderate views on peacemaking that has emerged as Israel's new power broker.

Yesh Atid's leader, political newcomer Yair Lapid, has said he will not sit in a government that is not seriously pursuing peace with the Palestinians. But the focus of his campaign has been mostly on helping the needs of Israel's struggling middle class, raising questions about how hard he will push on the peace issue.

Lawmaker Avigdor Lieberman, a Netanyahu ally, told Israel Radio on Thursday that the next government must focus on domestic issues rather than peacemaking to avoid political paralysis, given lawmakers' sharply divergent views.

"If we want to founder from the outset, and embark upon endless internal struggles, then make foreign policy the top priority," he said.

"If we want the government to be effective and accomplish things, and leave a strong, significant imprint, I think everyone understands the need for domestic changes is dramatic, and that is the order of the day. So leave the foreign issues aside," he said.

Netanyahu has hinted that is the direction he is going in through the two brief statements he has given since the election results came in late Tuesday. Both statements have focused on the need to build a broad coalition to address pressing domestic issues.

Lieberman's ultranationalist Yisrael Beitenu party teamed up on a joint list with Netanyahu's Likud for Tuesday's election.

IMF sees modest 2013 improvement for world economy

(AP) ? The International Monetary Fund is projecting a modest rise in global economic growth for 2013, but also warning that problems in the eurozone and the United States could derail momentum.

The report Wednesday, an update of the fund's World Economic Outlook, largely tracked the initial estimate from October, revising global growth down slightly by one-tenth of a percentage point, to 3.5 percent. The world economy grew 3.2 percent in 2012, according to IMF estimates.

"Some cautious optimism may indeed be justified," said the IMF's chief economist, Olivier Blanchard. "But we should be under no illusions: there remain considerable challenges ahead."

The IMF downgraded its forecast for the 17-country eurozone, projecting a slight economic contraction for 2013. It said that despite positive policy steps to tackle the debt crisis in some eurozone countries, continued uncertainty about a resolution to the crisis is weighing down growth prospects.

The IMF warned that the eurozone "continues to pose a large downside risk to the global outlook."

The revised report was more optimistic about the U.S. economy, forecast to grow by 2 percent for 2013. But prospects could change depending on impending tax and spending decisions. The U.S. government faces a series of budget negotiations as it tries to navigate mandated spending cuts and a dispute between President Barack Obama and lawmakers over the country's borrowing authority.

The IMF warned that the U.S. should avoid sharp cuts in the short term, but improve its books over the medium term by cutting entitlements and passing tax changes.

The updated report projected that stimulus policies in Japan would pull that country out of a brief recession, but said Japan had to deal with its debt in the medium term. Growth in China is projected to be 8.2 percent in 2013 compared with 7.8 percent in 2012.

The IMF also noted that growth in developing economies could be hurt by the problems still facing the U.S., Europe and Japan.
